Locrian Natural 6
Dark charcoal with a sudden flash of orange. Unsettling contrast. like finding a flower growing in a crack in concrete.
Musical Context
Key
Sound
A Locrian variant with an unexpected natural 6th that creates an augmented 2nd gap. Harsh and exotic. the ♭2 and ♭5 keep it dark, but the natural 6th adds an angular, unexpected brightness.
Practical Use Cases
- ●Over m7♭5 chords in harmonic minor contexts
- ●ii chord in a harmonic minor ii-V-i
- ●When the harmonic context specifically implies harmonic minor
Practical Notes
This is the second mode of harmonic minor. It's another option for m7♭5 chords, but the natural 6th creates an augmented 2nd interval that can sound awkward in melodic lines. Most jazz players prefer Locrian ♮2 (from melodic minor) for half-diminished chords. Use this one when you're specifically thinking in harmonic minor. for example, if the whole progression is clearly in a harmonic minor key. Otherwise, Locrian ♮2 is usually smoother.
