Common questions
- How long should I practice scales daily?
- 15 to 30 focused minutes a day beats two hours on the weekend. Pick one scale or technique, set a timer, and work it until it's clean. Consistency builds muscle memory; marathon sessions just build fatigue.
- What's the best practice order for modes?
- Start with Ionian (major) and Aeolian (natural minor), the most common and what your ear already knows. Then add Dorian and Mixolydian, the workhorse jazz and rock modes. Save Phrygian, Lydian, and Locrian for later; they're more characterful and less needed for everyday playing.
- How do I memorize the fretboard?
- Learn the notes on the low E and A strings cold (just E and A, frets 0 through 12), since those anchor every chord and scale shape. Use octave shapes (root plus the same note 2 strings down and 2 frets up) to find every other note. Drill 5 minutes daily for a week and the rest fills in.
